Meet the McKinneys – A Girls Inc. Success Story
Brooke McKinney, a rising high school freshman, and her mother, Brandy McKinney, have made Girls Inc. of Central Alabama a family affair! Brooke has been part of the organization since the first grade, while Brandy serves as an instructor for Operation SMART. Over the years, Girls Inc. has greatly impacted their lives, most recently with Brooke becoming Central Alabama’s first eighth-grade recipient of the Lucile Miller Wright “Strong, Smart & Bold” Scholarship.
Girls Inc. has been a cornerstone of Brooke’s development, offering hands-on STEM activities that have nurtured her curiosity and broadened her horizons. These experiences have fueled her passion for learning and set her sights on studying veterinary medicine.
Brooke hopes to attend Shades Valley High School in the fall and aims to use her scholarship for college at either Auburn University or Howard University. “Ever since I was little, I’ve loved animals and wanted to be a vet,” says Brooke. “Girls Inc. has given me the confidence and skills to make that dream a reality.” Brooke also spoke about how important the friendships she has made are and how Girls Inc. has helped to strengthen them.
For Brandy, Girls Inc. has provided an opportunity to step outside her career as an industrial and systems engineer and teach young girls about STEM careers and achieving their aspirations alongside her two daughters.
“Girls Inc. has not only empowered Brooke but has also strengthened our bond,” reflects Brandy. “We’ve both grown and learned together through the program’s incredible opportunities.”
As Brooke prepares for high school, she advises other girls to stay true to themselves and go after all opportunities. The support from Girls Inc. and her mother has been instrumental in her growth, equipping her with the confidence and skills to pursue her dreams. We can’t wait to see the amazing things Brooke will accomplish and are proud to have her and Brandy as part of the Girls Inc. of Central Alabama family!
