In this month’s volunteer spotlight, we’re thrilled to highlight Kathryn Tanner, a dedicated Girls Inc. of Central Alabama volunteer who has been a constant source of inspiration for the girls at the Crestwood Center.
Kathryn first connected with Girls Inc. over 15 years ago and since then, she’s been drawn to the organization’s mission of empowering girls to grow into confident, capable women. “I really believe that empowered girls grow up to be empowered women, and that makes our society better,” Kathryn says. This belief led her to not only become a regular volunteer but also to serve on the Host Committee for the annual Bold Futures Breakfast.
Volunteering has become a fulfilling part of Kathryn’s life, and though she admits she initially felt out of her comfort zone, she now feels more connected than ever to the girls and the staff. She reflects on her early experiences, feeling uncertain about whether she was making an impact. But a turning point came when she realized that just showing up consistently for the girls was enough.
One of Kathryn’s favorite aspects of volunteering is forming one-on-one connections with the girls. She recalls a memorable moment when she sat with a young girl who was going through some challenges at home. “I didn’t do anything but listen, but that’s part of it—making sure they feel seen, heard, and valued,” Kathryn explains. These emotional connections are the most rewarding part of her time at Girls Inc.
Kathryn’s advice for young girls, particularly those who may feel overwhelmed by societal expectations, is to learn to trust yourself. “Tune out the noise of groupthink and do what feels right to you,” she encourages.
Whether through homework help, emotional support, or simply being present, Kathryn’s commitment to empowering the next generation of girls is truly inspiring.
