Destined for Success: Destiny Askew
For the past three years, Destiny Askew has been dedicated to inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Her first two years with Girls Inc. was spent as the Outreach Volunteer Coordinator, where she managed the Bold Futures Mentoring Program as an AmeriCorps member.
On Destiny’s service as an AmeriCorps, Girls Inc. Volunteer and Development Coordinator Marlesa Willis says, “Destiny is a hard worker, lover of plants, and amazing service member. She is always there when you need her and she loves to give people all of her very best. From baking to gardening to a listening ear, she is a shining light and her presence is always a gift to all.”
These days, Destiny is still an AmeriCorps member with the YWCA’s Building Communities, Building Lives program. Instead of serving a third year with Girls Inc., she works with high school students at another local organization, Build Up.
But Destiny still serves at Girls Inc., just in a new way. Destiny is one of the six inaugural members of the Girls Inc. Ambassadors program. She advocates for Girls Inc. across social platforms and always engages in Ambassador trainings, meetings, and events.
When asked about her experience with Girls Inc., Destiny says,
“The number of opportunities I have been given by Girls Inc. has been crazy. They flew me to nationals to get trained on how to teach self-defense. I got to see Cyntoia Brown speak, and meet her too! Girls Inc. has even let me take over their garden. I have also gained social media training. They’ve given me so many opportunities to make me a better person and professional. Thank y’all. “
Besides her personal growth, Destiny says she loved her time with Girls Inc. girls.
“I miss the girls so bad. They are so funny and smart. I especially miss the ones that would just get on my nerves because they were just so curious about the world and ready to test it out.”
On the impact of Girls Inc., Destiny says, “While I think many girls are just naturally just curious outgoing kids, I know I have watched Girls Inc take some of the shyest, most timid girls and make them blossom. That could never be possible without the passionate staff there and their outstanding leadership. All wonderful professional women ready to guide and help. (Shout out to the best supervisor Ms. Latrice Little-Jackson).”
Destiny was known around the office for her incredible service, creative ideas, and especially her impeccable baking skills. Former fellow AmeriCorps member Marlee says, “Serving with Destiny was amazing. She was always there for the girls, and for me too. I’m so glad that she stayed on as an Ambassador, and I can’t wait to see all the great things she does in the future!”
Destiny Askew will always be a part of the Girls Inc. family. We miss her presence these days, but we’re incredibly grateful to have retained her support as she moves on to find her destiny.
